Explore the engine's historyDesigned by Ernst Fuhrmann, the Type 547 was a flat-four developed for motorsport. During its first tests in 1953, the 1.5-litre engine produced 110 PS at 6,200 rpm. Its distinctive feature was a valve train with four overhead camshafts driven by vertical shafts.
The vertical shafts transferred drive from the crankshaft to the camshafts in the cylinder heads, providing precise valve timing at high engine speeds. Building the model lets you explore this layout and observe how its moving parts work together.
Engine history in Porsche NewsroomThe Carrera name commemorates Porsche's successes in Mexico's Carrera Panamericana race. Initially associated with the Type 547 racing engine, it later became part of the name of the road-going 356 A Carrera.
